i have an inspiron e1501 from dell.
i bought the laptop at about $800 dollars in january, and my father dropped it by accident. now the screen is destroyed.
i called the dell people and the woman said it would cost about 500 dollars (without tax) for the repairs and would take about 10 days for me to get it back.
after checking online, i see that my laptop is now for $499.
should i just buy a new one?

Buy new one....(you get that new warranty period, you can reuse memory & battery to new laptop if it is of same model)

You can used the old one as desktop with some external monitor (like LCD monitor or plain old monitor ) attached to it to solve the display problem. I did same when my laptop display died on me and use it as desktop with external monitor.

Repairing Laptops is seldom worth it, especially if the screen is destroyed. I would only recommend it if it was a high end laptop ($2000-$4000+) which in this case it isn't...

As quick as technology becomes obsolete, go and buy yourself a new laptop if you can afford it. On top of new hardware and new up to date software you'll get some kind of warranty with it.

In the interim, if you still want to use it you should be able to hook the laptop up to an external monitor provided nothing but the LCD display is busted.

Greetings,

Dell, as do most retail manufactures of Computers often price repairs to exceed/meet the value of your current product, this often causes you to buy a new product, can you blame them?
Nope, they have to re-order old parts from warehouses or distributers.

In most cases you are better off with a new laptop.

IF you really want to keep your laptop, try finding a local PC repair shop, in most cases the repairs would be minor and be less then half of the Dell price.

You can also recover the hard drive and put it in the new one and have all your files, then create a CD of your files, swap hard drives, install windows and add all the files, then anytime you put something important, put it on a cd or flash drive and swap drives. then, if the hard drive breaks or your laptop falls bottom down, then you will have a backup for everything and windows. PS, you can also buy a case which has USB cord so you can just use the old hard drive while in windows. But, Yeah salvage everything, keyboard, battery, media drive, hard drive, memory and system board. That can be a long lasting laptop.

There are repair shop out here that can repair you screen for less, and the most I charge in my shop for a replacement lcd screen is $200.00 the parts are around $125.00 So you are looking at $75 in labor. Thats to much for that repair and you would be better just buying a new one because you can get a new one for $599.00 with a Intel Core2 deuo in it.

Buy a new one. The old one will likely never be right after the repair.
