Are the Dodgers that desperate for pitching?

The Dodgers seem to br grasping at straws, hoping that one or more of the recently acquired vets pans out to be the spark needed to get back into the playoff hunt. Still, one has to wonder what GM Ned Colletti sees in players like Shea Hillenbrand, Mark Sweeney, Roberto Hernandez, and David Wells that he feels they are worth bringing aboard after being dumped by other teams.

Most Dodgers fans seem to be more interested in seeing the young, home-grown players get more opportunities. For example, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier should be playing every day, rather than sitting in favor of 39-year old Luis Gonzales.

Colletti is hoping Wells is better than Brett Tomko, who has been simply awful. My guess is, the improvement will be marginal, if anything at all.

Yeah, pretty much. Despite the crazy depth that the Dodgers had at the beginning of the year, Randy Wolf and Jason Schmidt going on the DL has really hurt us in the pitching department. We'll see how good of a move this is, but if you ask me, we still should have gotten a bat at the deadline.

Right now he is going to help out that woeful 4/5 in the rotation. He is not expected to be a magic bullet, just get some outs which have been few and far between for the end of the rotation. They should of kept Billingsly in the 5 spot instead of moving him to the bullpen. He was groomed to be a starter not a reliever when he was called up last year. Go Blue Go

My thoughts exactly. With the Pads this season he was awful, he couldn't have had more than a couple of quality starts. I suppose the Dodgers were attracted by his experience and hope that he can make some quality spot starts while their own pitchers are rehabbing their injuries.

Signing Wells and trading away Betemit for Proctor are 2 of the worst deals I've seen them make in quite a while. They need OFFENSE, not pitching...

They have very little chance of making the wildcard, because they have NO chance of catching the D-Backs...

he has nothing going for him...40's....fat..... cant hit 87 on his fastball consistently anymore

he will probably retire soon

not a loss for padres and not a gain for dodgers!

Wants to stay on the West Coast so he doesn't have to travel far from home. Considering he's lugging all that fat around, he gets winded going out to the mound to pitch. He's done, he should hang 'em up while on top.

He can generate some wins.
SD is too conservative and could not take a free spirit on the team.
LA is lala land. he will excell there.
