You know what? I truly believe that the world hasn't gotten worse. I think it's stayed the same but the media has changed. If you revisit history, ask your parents/grandparents what things were like back then, you'll find that indeed there were still murders and rapes (Jack the Ripper comes to mind), robberies (Bonnie and Clyde), shootings (JFK, Bobby Kennedy, MLK, Malcolm X, John Lennon) and violence (you can choose from the Holocaust, Ku Klux Klan violence, Kent State, Tianenmen Square, etc. for an example) All that has changed is that the media not only oversensationalizes everything nowadays, but also that our digital technology makes it possible for us to know something bad happened in the world pretty much the second it happens. This can lead to us all being in a paranoid state of fear. Conspiracy theorists believe that the government controls the media enough to make them sensationalize it to strike fear in our hearts so that we stay loyal to our government. Watch V for Vendetta- it's a very good movie about just that.

I'm sorry to hear your were attacked. This is not a new phenomenon in London, I was beaten a robbed on the street over 20 years ago. What disturbs me the most is nowadays you fear they might have a weapon. It seems people at a younger age don't realise the consequences of carrying tools.
I feel this is something we should address, perhaps right from primary age. With the Stephen Lawrence case back in the news this week and the sad loss of Rhys Jones it is something that needs to be given direct attention. If necessary we must get harder about punishment.
I have to say I don't feel any less safe than I did before, but living in Town probably makes one more savvy.
It knocks your confidence when you are a victim of violent attack, but it can also toughen your resolve.

The question is whether it has ever been better, and whether it could be better in future. These are actually scientific questions that sociologists and anthropologists and so on study intensively. As far as I know, part of the answer is that modern societies are on the whole much safer than traditional ones, so that there is progress. And that many Western countries are much safer than the US (I assume you're in the US), which means that there are probably very specific things the US could and should do to make things better but which we refuse to do.
