Some say The Sonics, some say The Stooges or the New York Dolls. I say The Ramones and Television were the first to be titled with the name Punk though. it's all about CBGB.
As for who created the sound first, definitely The Sonics from 1960 to 1968. Without them there would be no Stooges and NY Dolls. Their sound was so thrashy and fast. No one had ever seen anything like them before. They were a huge influence on the early Punk bands on the 1970s. Huge.

Punk evolved....detroit there was Iggy and the Stooges and MC5....in new york there was the Dolls and Television the Ramones......& the Dolls went to the uk....malcom mc laren came back to America to manage them(dolls) a bit ..ruined them ....went back and put together the sex pistols
nobody started Punk...nobody owns it and nobody killed it they just left and got old....
Lenny kaye and the nuggets on the jacket of the RECORD used the term punk...nobody even knows them anymore

Without a question, Iggy and the Stooges. No one knew what to call it in 1969, but it was most definitely punk!

The MC5 go all the way back to 1964. They beat The Stooges by three years.
