It's Latin for "to this" and is used to indicate that something is for a particular purpose and no other. An ad hoc committee, for example, is one set up for a specific purpose, to plan a specific event or make a specific response.

In job advertisements, it means you have to take whatever action circumstances demand as and when they occur. It's a catch-all so that, if a certain task crops up for immediate attention, you can't say "That's not my job."

Careful, though; don't let it's inclusion in the advertisement turn you into an absolute gofer.

Usually refers to special committees serving at large and at the pleasure of someone or another.
Don't worry about it, it might just mean you go buy the supplies for your office or (gulp sweat) they want you to be in charge of the coffee. Could look good on your resume later.

"Served on the Ad Hoc Committee for wellness and
pharmaceuticals"
You dispensed an aspirin during coffee break for someone with a headache.
Good luck!

In California civil service they call it "other duties as required". It means in addition to whatever the specific duties are, you also get to do anything the boss says needs to be done right now.
