Good question. I've often wondered the same thing myself. Even in the daytime, a light in the freezer would be helpful. Some chest freezers have lights, so it isn't the colder temperature that prevents fridge manufacturers from putting lights in the freezer compartments.

Here's a question back at you. I have a GE dishwasher, basic model, in which the Jet-Dri lid is a fake! It doesn't open, it isn't attached to anything inside the door, so why did they put it in there?

Because 1) ice reflects light
2) when you get a hunger attack at night you're more likely to open the fridge than the freezer!

My Dad always told us kids that there is a troll that turns the light on and off when you open the door. The freezer company didn't want the added expense of another troll to turn the light on and off. Besides...its too cold in the freezer for that poor little guy. Jeeeez.

Initially they added the light in the refrigerated section so that you can see what is rotting in the back or your fridge. Stuff doesn't really rot in the freezer.

Later models though have lights on both freezer and refrigerator sides for added convenience.

maybe because the fridge needs to be warmer [the light provides warmth] and the freezer is colder.... wait, no.... cuz the light in the fridge turns off when you close the door. maybe because people assume you use the fridge more than the freezer and so they put a light in it so you can easily navigate and find what you need to find to eat...

gosh i went into that too deep. :]

I have a light in my fridge. They are side by side (the fridge and freezer) so there's a little switch at the bottom that makes the light turn on.

Hmmm.... maybe because people use refers more often? I'm really not sure.

Light bulbs should be able to withstand the temperature in a freezer as we have lights outside during the winter.

Good question!

because you don't use the freezer as much and if you put a light when you open it the light will turn and the bulb will get hot and after you close the door the bulb will still be warm and it might affect the food that needs to be frozen.

There is a light in both of our fridge and freezers. Is the light broken?
