while i am sure there are a few, for the majority no, i think we have evolved to the point that one can develop an area, and still maintain other areas, aka a "normal life"
being eccentric is more and more looked down on, when it goes to the point of isolating you from being a well-rounded person

so yes, some times a person is placed in a tragic situation, or is oppressed, but one doesnt live in that any longer then they must, they find ways out if possible

A philosopher is only a lover of knowledge. To think about what you think would seem to be the sole criteria.

A philosopher can drink six-packs, he can drive a truck, and work in a restaurant. Anyone can be one. It is not an exclusive club. Why more don't, I'll never understand.

I can't help but think that it would lead to a fuller life, to follow reason where it might lead, than to live an unexamined life. It has been a boon to me and my friends.

Your question makes an assumption I do NOT agree with, and therefore find this question highly offensive:

You assume the possibility of existing modern philosophers, and if you know the history of Philosophy, there is no such thing as modern philosophers. Philosophy tied when Existentialism birthed. Upon that time, we kissed all five branches of Philosophy goodbye and rule a world by feelings and emotions. If Socrates and Plato and Aristotle were alive to day, well, this world would be a good place. Unfortunately, they're not, and in case you haven't lived in the physical world (perhaps you're vacationing from the metaphysical? happy to have you!) lately, this world is a horrid and awful place to live in.

I think the guy who answered about them all being in academics pretty much destroyed your question in its entirty.

Tragic lives and oppression do not make philosophers, having a brain and being able to think for oneself makes philosophers.

No - I think most of them are probably working as college professors these days making over 100k a year with good medical and dental benefits. That was all the ancient Greek philosophers did after all - they made their livings teaching at their academys.

Good Luck!!!
