Go to your favorite bookstore and purchase a few books on the subject. This way you can take a yellow marker and highlight everything you feel is important to you.
Like Persiphone says, be careful of the contest thing. Some of these contests are scams to get you to purchase a book that you may be published in. They'll tell you that you won, when in reality EVERYONE who entered won. And everyone who entered bought a book so that they could see themselves in print. NOT COOL....
In many writer's groups you may be required to 'critique' other people's works as well as they yours. So, it's good to bone up on your writing skills by buying these books. You can't edit or critique someone else's work if you can't write well yourself. That's not by any means a cut to 'you' personally, okay? It's just a fact.
Good Luck!

Creative writing websites aren't a good idea if you intend to post work there. They are playgrounds for plagiarists and for that reason, most publishers won't touch material previously posted online anymore. Too easy to steal, then they have a major problem tracing the ownership of work back to you. Many of those sites even have small print giving ownership of anything published there to the site owners. Ouch!@!
As for contests, they are iffy. Many are fakes. I have known people who won contests where they were guaranteed publicatrion of their book. It took them 3 plus years to get the publisher to actually publish it and now they have sold THREE copies.
Check with Absolute Write Water Cooler. Join there and ask questions of others. Also go through their Bewares and Background Checks section carefully. Also check with Preditors and Editors, Writers Wall, Writers Weekly, Anne Crispin's site and as many others as you can find to help you make good decisions as to whether or not a contest is legit.
You can also check my starred questions. I star all good questions i find on writing for others to use. Print them out and study them. There is a lot of good information here. Pax- C

There is a great critique site that has special message boards there. You can submit your work without much threat of plagarism. There is also a page of other websites that will assist you with your creative writing. The website is critiquecircle.com.

There are two websites that I frequently use.
1. Teen Voices and
2. Teen Ink
Also, try fanfiction.com as you can post any fan fiction books.
