Im a 15 year old guy and I can do 40-50 push ups each time (If I do the breathing properly ;P)

My question is what do push ups actually do? Is 40-50 for each rep good? What are they doing?

my shoulder blades kinda stick out a little, could it be fixing that? wild guess :P thanks in advance :)

Pushups are going to provide you with more muscular endurance in your chest, triceps and deltoids, mostly the anterior. Not much to do with the back - though you can work your lats if you position your arms correctly.

The more you do them, the more you will be able to do, though this type of exercise isnt the best for increasing the overall strength of the muscle tissue.

40-50 isnt huge amount, but it isnt a little either. I know lots of people who are lucky to push out the same number of fast food joints they eat at each week.

Try doing some weight training as well as your pushups and you will increase much faster.

Push ups build the chest and triceps and to a lesser degree the front delts. If you position your hands wide apart you can target the outer chest and even the lats. I did these a lot when I didn't have acess to a chin up bar and it definitely helped.
If you're doing 50 that's not bad. Try doing push ups very slowly and to help build strength. Try different hand positions to target different parts of the chest. You can do them with your feet elevated to work the upper chest. Do them with your hands close together to emphasize the triceps. That's what I like most about the push-up. There are so many ways to do them and I've never heard of anyone getting hurt while doing them.

pushups work mainly your chest muscles (pecs) and your triceps. Also, you're doing 40-50 reps for each set, not 40-50 for each rep. And yeah that's fairly good. If you keep increasing your reps, you will get more and more resistance power, but you will not gain any extra strength in your muscles. You will be toning your chest and triceps more, making them look cutty. If you want them to get bigger, try more weight on you while you're doing the pushups. Or, instead, do bench press.

Push ups work pretty much work your triceps, deltoids, and chest. From what I have heard they are similar to the bench press. 40-50 reps for each set is pretty good, especially when compared to me. I can only do about 10 in a row if I want to have a heart attack...

Push-ups strenghthen your triceps. which is the back of your arms. It also strenghthens your upper back it doesnt stop your shoulder blades from sticking out. Most people like to show off there biceps but that is the muscle in your arm that you use the least throught the day but to answer your question it strenghthens your triceps and chest.
