That's a good answer Michael, I forgot about Chesty, but the answer is a U.S. Army General.
This is a tough one, I accidently found it searching for something else. I'm surprised I didn't hear it before.
Here's a hint, he was in the Pacific Theater. I'll give another hint later if needed.

Another good one Michael, I guess my source was wrong, sorry, there is more than one. The one I'm looking for enlisted in 1898 with the 2nd Volunteer Infantry. He was mostly a 3-Star General during WW2, he was promoted to temporary 4 - Star General in March of 1945 and reverted back to 3 - Star General in Jan. 1946, but retired as a Full General in July 1946.
Here's another hint : his father was a Prussian Officer in the Franco - Prussian War.

Gen Lewis "Chesty" Puller rose from private in the Marine Corps to Lt. General, which would be three stars. He's the only U.S. military person that I know of that rose from pvt to general officer rank.

Found it. General Johnnie Wilson, after 6 years as enlisted applied for and went to OCS.

General Johnnie Edward Wilson was born on February 4, 1944. He was raised in Lorain, Ohio and entered the Army in August 1961 as an enlisted soldier, attaining the rank of SSG before attending Officer Candidate School (OCS). On completion of OCS in 1967, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Logistics Management from the Florida Institute of Technology. His military education includes completion of the Ordnance Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Army Command and General Staff College, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

He is now retired, no firm idea on the movie but would guess "Jarhead" since Gen Wilson served in Gulf War I.
