I'm interested in primary teaching and I know a sense of humour is important. Has anyone got a few examples of this to show me? I also need a line to envoke humour to add to my personal statement.

Any help on this would be great, thanks guys

As a First Grade teacher, I can tell you that you need to be able to laugh at yourself more than anything. You will make mistakes and goof up. But also, those little kids are precious and they can be so funny if you let them, while still behaving in class. I think its most important to have a sense of humor so that you can allow your class to have fun and express themselves. However, you also need to know when NOT to laugh and when something is not funny, for example when someone could get injured or a rule is being broken. It's just something that needs good balance, just like everything else.

On the other note, I do not think that humor belongs in a personal statement. You need to make a professional impression and then bring in the humor and extra personality at your interview.

Anything silly is fun for them but keep it low key so they don't get out of hand.
As an example, when they're lining up to leave the room at the end of the day remind them to leave enough space between each other for your pet invisible elephant to join the line somewhere. They giggle but then they're also not close enough to bug each other.
If the wind slams your door shut tell them that it is the classroom ghost who is always watching. If you say stuff like that with a twinkle in your eye and a grin on your face MOST will know you're joking.
Keep your sense of humour especially in situations where someone is misbehaving. You'll be less stressed and the ones who aren't part of the problem won't get anxious.

Sorry but I don't know what you mean by a personal statement.

It's not like you're going to get a standing ovation for being funny in class, so the best advice is to not treat it like it's Comedy Hour. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be funny, but it does mean you shouldn't try too hard. You'll just come off as desperate. :)

If you're looking for a line though, my favorite is from Grouch Marx- "I like children...fried." It's creepy. Perfect for primary grades.
