background, and make it pure black like a silhouette. What's the best way to do this?

As I understand it, you have already cut it out of its original background, and now you want to make it a silhouette, right?

So, to do that, right-click on the layer with the cut-out, use the Magic Wand (select it by pressing W), then select your cut-out by clicking anywhere outside of it, then press Alt-Backspace (Cmd-Delete on a Mac) and it should fill in with black. Then you can put another background layer behind your silhouette.

magic wand outside the cut out, then shift=cntrl=i (inverses the selection) then fill with black (paint bucket tool). If you just want an outline, after you shift=cntrl=i you go to Select then Modify then Border and select how thick you want the outline to be, make a new layer, and then fill it with black with the paint bucket tool. Then delete the original cut out. You can set the opacity to decide how noticeable the silhoutte/outline should be.
