I agree, at least $100 per day and $150 is better. The Euro and the English pound are very expensive these days.
One tip, when you're in the cities, tear out the pages on the guidebooks to carry with you so you don't have a heavy load, and it's easy to pull out. have fun!

As much as you can, but at least $100 a day if you want to go places and see things.
The average tourist seems to spend $250 a day in western Europe. (This is a guess, based on the 200 euro they spend when visiting Amsterdam.)
So 100 will be cutting it tight.

If you travel between now and next July, not booking hostels before you come over is not a problem. Just book for your first town.
Talk with the people you meet, word of mouth is the best way to select the hostels. Ask the people how they would judge the hostel compared with the one you are in at that time, and you have a fair comparison.

Also buy a good guidebook, worth its money and its weight.
I like the Lonely planet series, they have info on hostels, hotels (sometimes even cheaper if you travel with 2 or more people,) places to eat, sights and museums and travel, all with prices and quality warnings where needed.
Take the one that covers your whole trip.
If you buy it before traveling you can work out your budget, but remember that the guide is always a little out of date and that the cheapest rooms are always gone when you ask for them. Count on spending 25% more than the newest edition of any guidebook tells you. (Add 10% for each year the book is old.)

Not sure where you're going but I live in England and I would say 200 USD per day and that's conservative!
