im reading a book, Huckleberry finn, and it continues to say by and by but i dont really get what they're trying to get across with this?!

It also means, "In the fullness of time"; "As time advanced";
as was already brought out, "Eventually" or, "After awhile".
"By and by" is actually a Southern term for the measurement of time passing. You would say, "By and by, they returned from their journey."

Simply put, it means "later", as in "later they crossed the river" (by and by they crossed the river). Try it; any time you see "by and by" substitute "later" or whatever expression you commonly use.
