I hope you are not putting poison out where basically ANY animal can end up eating it...pets, endangered or threatened animals, or even children, etc. Even some species of squirrel are threatened..meaning if you kill them you are braking the law and could be heavily fined. Leave the squirrels alone.

Squirrels are relatively omnivorous; they will eat seeds, nuts, plants, insects, human foods, even bird eggs if they can get them.
Putting rat poison in an area where squirrels could get to it is a bad idea for two reasons.
First, if the squirrels can get to it, then *birds* could probably eat it as well.
Second, now you have a bunch of dead or dying squirrels around your area, that are pretty much *loaded* with poison! If a dog, cat, hawk, or other opportunistic predator were to find and eat one of these, they would probably be poisoned as well. Imagine trying to explain why your neighbor's terrier is suddenly throwing up blood.......
Best way to deal with squirrels is to use a few live-catch box traps. That way, you can transport them to some nearby natural area, away from homes, where they won't cause problems....

OKAY! Bad idea! Yes, squirrels are rodents, so they may be attracted to the traps. But then, if they ingest anything, they're DEAD! We don't want to have dead squirrels on the sidewalk, and on the laws, and being run over on the road, and stuffed in mailboxes. Then birds and dogs and cats will come and chew the corpses up, so now you have chewed up, dead squirrels and other dead animals! It's evil! It's gross! So, unless you were planning to actually do this...don't do it!

I would think in general no because squirrels have lived near rats for quite some time and they don't seem to exploit their habitats in the same way.

If it contains something with grain or sweet, yes they will. If this has to do with them getting in your attic, you need to know that they are a game animal and covered by your state's game laws. Killing them out of season or by means other than allowed by state game laws is illegal and you could face a hefty fine.

Probably yes, it's tasty to them too.
I have a problem with answers here that indicate it's okay to harm other people but not animals. Where is their priorities? Me, me, me, that's where.
