Actually there is a new series to begin at the end of 2008 where an NHL club will play a European team for the new Victoria Cup. This was announced about 5 - 6 weeks ago. Not sure how they select the clubs to play in it though.
Habs vs Red Army wasn't it New Years Eve 1974 or 1975 - Dryden vs Tretiak ended in 2 - 2 tie.
LOL - the Flyers game - the Russians threatened to quit in the middle of the game.

IN this day and age, there is no point in having European clubs, play NHL clubs. Aside from the first few series, the NHL teams have dominated. With the influx of the best Eastern Europeans now in the NHL, the gap between the NHL and the European leagues has grown, and the defection of Yashin and Svitov back to Russia isn;t going to close that gap.
Also, there is no longer the mystique there was prior to the 1988-89 season. Back then, we only heard about those players at the Olympics, Worlds, CC's etc. Once they were here....the appeal was gone.

Yup, Bob's right. Dave Schultz wasn't real nice to the Russians, neither were the Watson brothers, or Barber, or ....
Besides we got the Canada Cup, since renamed the World Cup of Hockey, every four years to take care of any need for international play and the Olympics in between. Just in case that's not enough, there's the other world cup, played every year, the Spengler cup, world juniors, etc.

They had the series back in 75-76 but the Flyers scared them away.
