Why did Narcissa Malfoy lie to Voldemort about Harry being dead?

She just wanted to be sure that Draco was safe. He was all she cared about at the time. Technically she wasn't even a death eater. She didn't have the dark mark but served Voldemort because Lucius did.

We see through Harry's mind directly after she does this why she does it. Harry understands that Narcissa cares solely for the safety of her son and nothing else. I don't know if you remember, but she asks Harry whether Draco is alive and in the castle, and he answers that he is. Narcissa realizes that the only way back in the castle is if the battle is over and she doesn't have to fight for Voldemort any more. She doesn't care if Voldemort wins or loses, she only wants her son to be alive.

To be able to enter Hogwarts. She knew Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle had all been in the school at the start of the battle. While she probably could care less for the other two, she was deeply concerned for her son. Which was why she asked Harry if he was still alive. Then by lieing to Voldemort she insured she could enter with the "victors" of the battle and be reunited with her son.

Also, she was finally tired of Voldemort. Although her sister, husband, and son were Death Eaters, she wasn't. She supported Voldemort and believed in what he was doing for a very long time. But that slowly vanished as Voldemort became more of a threat to her immediate family. Their lives were in constant threat of death and they were being made to feel as both unwanted guests and prisoners in their own home.

Sure Lucius had made mistakes that brought much of this on, but Draco didn't need to pay for them. Yet in book six Voldemort was not only punishing Draco for his father's failure, by setting him the task of killing Dumbledore, was also setting him up as punishment to his father for his failures. Had Dumbledore not died, then two possibilities awaited poor Draco as Voldemort saw it. Death at Dumbledore's hands (which Dumbledore would never have killed him) or he would have killed Draco himself for failing to do as ordered.

Narcissa had finally grown tired of it and knew the only one who could defeat Voldemort was Harry. So she sought to help Harry by placing Voldemort off his gaurd. When the time was right she was sure he'd act.

At that point in her life, she decided that she didn't care anymore about sides. She just wanted to get her family out of everything alive. She was in it for her family, and if Harry could help save them, then she would be willing to lie Voldemort.
