Well, to start, not everyone's cycle is exactly 28 days--in fact, most women have +/- a few days of that.
The day you get your period is Day 1. The day you get your next period is the next Day 1. That means that the last day of each cycle is the day before you get your period. Say you got your period August 1st. If you had a 29 day cycle, August 30th is the day you should get your period again. The date it ends has no effect on when it starts next, unfortunately!
So start paying attention to when you get your periods, and count the days in between. If you're young, it'll vary from month to month (it takes a while for a girl's cycle to "settle down" in the beginning). Eventually, it'll decide how long it wants to be---and you'll get it within a few days of that estimation every month.

28 days after it starts. So your period would be Days 1-5, ovulation (release of egg) on day 14 or 15, days 14 -20 passage of egg through the body. If you don't get pregnant, then your next period would start on Day 1 (29 days from the first day of your last period).
