Yes, there is organizational psychology which might deal with improving mechanical engineering firm or with using the principles of both disciplines to solve some joint problems. The beauty of our surroundings (even unnatural ones) and their ease of use affect our psychological state and our ability to function.

There are other aspects of psychology that impact engineering, too. A machine with too many "bells and whistles" will be overwhelming psychologically. Think about how many functions on most cell phones are never used because they aren't intuitive or explained well in the accompanying documents. This is an example of engineering surpassing psychology because the devices are designed by experts, mostly for experts. A psychologist could do some investigations with the target users and make suggestions for all kinds of designs.

Science meets psychology in the field of Quantum Physics. Quantum Physics is a truly fascinating study of how our universe works and actually provides scientific proof of some fundamental philosophical principles that when fully realized totally shift our paradigm of how we see the world around us. Once reading a book on Quantum Physics, you will never again see the world in the same way. For a truly miraculous, scientifically sound, and psychologically growth promoting study, I do encourage you to check out Quantum Physics. An excellent place to begin is with the movie, "What the Bleep Do We Know" and the follow up movie, "Down the Rabbit.Hole." You will also find LOTS of books on it at your local library or bookstore. Oh I do hope you check this out..

You sound like a perfect candidate for the field of ergonomics. Ergonomics deals with the human/machine interface, such as designing machines/equipment to reduce repetitive motion injuries, etc. It requires a knowledge of human behavior as well as the mechanics of the machinery involved, among other things.
North Carolina State University has a terrific program in their psychology department with Professor Mike Wogalter.
