A Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis
It is one volume of the Chronicles of Narnia which focuses on the relationship between the horse and the boy.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe also has a number of animal characters.
James and the Giant Peach, Mathilda and Holes are more family favorites of ours.

I would recommend "Journey to the West" by Wu Cheng'en. This fairytale was only translated into English in the 1940s, but it has been popular in China for over 500 years. It is exciting, has animals, some historical and spiritual references and is a bit like Harry Potter, 5 centuries before its time.

Best: The Jungle Books by Kipling. Just what you ordered.
2nd choice: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH - I would say that it only falls short of your requirements in the history department, but maybe the 70s count as history now? Excellent book, in any case.
3rd choice: especially appropriate for girls, any of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. *Excellent* *true* descriptions of American pioneer life through the eyes of a little girl. The detail is amazing - but it's because the author was actually there. The things that she describes - that she no doubt lived through time and time again - seem marvelous to us today.

Terry pratchett is a good author, I believe he writes childrens books as well. Not the Discworld books, they do contain the odd swear word. Or something classic like the Narnia books.

"My Family and Other Animals" by Gerald Durrell would be ideal. Perhaps have a look at :

if you want to know more.
