Any closed two dimentional figure that is made with straight lines.
A triangle is a polygon; a square, a rectangle, a diamong are polygons. A pentagon is a 5 sided polygon, and so on.

gon = 2 dimensional closed shape with distinct sides.

polygon: a multi-sided (at least 3) shape in 2 dimensions usually closed like a triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon etc.... A circle or a star are not polygons.

"Poly" means many. "gon" refers to angles. So, many angles each of two sides a piece.
Most polygons can be defined by a word which tells you exactly how many sides there are. e.g. triangle, square, pentagon (!), etc..
