Yep, that's because radar detectors work by detecting the radar beam. In other words, the radar beam will have already hit you before you are alerted. Now it could be the guy ahead of you just got nailed and your detector picked up a portion of that beam, if so you can slow down and not get caught.

Ya, pretty much all radar detectors cant pick up laser guns. Theres the odd chance that higher end models like Valentine1 and Cobras may pick it up ocasionally, but its not gonna happen everytime.
Their lazer is gonna hit you, before your radar finds the cop and signals back to you.

Some detectors detect laser, but it's a more effective tool than radar, which, if you are far enough away from the source, is too weak to bounce back to the source.
