find the meter the line will run from there to your water heater usually in a strait line

if you have a water faucet outside that seems to be in that line that is where you should dig

If your meter is in a meterbox outside, the valve to shut the water off is right there. You can mark from there to the area where it enters the house and dig down there. If the water meter is in the basement, you will need to tie in after the meter and run the line back outside. You cannot tie in before the meter.

There should be two shut offs. One at or near the property line which belongs to the city (but you can get a device called a "key" to turn it off there).

But the second shut off (which you should use) will be on your side of the meter and in most cases inside. Find and use this one because you want to be able to shut off the water to your sprinkler system for maintenance, without going to the city.

go from the service meter to the house in a direct route, look for the 1st exterior faucet/bib b4 the house and start from there. Your next move would b 2 chk the basement in that area or crawl hole to find its entrance.
once located at the home level, you can trace b/wards to the bid and shut off the service and place in-line a gate valve to the house for future use.
At the gate V place a T ahead of it and place another inline-above grass level & green box for access and start your sprinkler pvc lines from that point to all your zones.

Go to the water company and ask them. You could call "Miss Dig" and someone will come out and stake all the utilities going into your house.
Good Luck!
