I don't understand why he doesnt have to be traded.

Wells wasn't in the minor league system - he cleared waivers and had already become a free agent.

Since he is over 30 (way over 30) he can leave the team when designated for assignment, the padres had 10 days to trade him

as a 10 yr. veteran, he has the right to contest a move to the minor leagues...instead, he can not report and instead declare hiself a free agent.

Mike Myers did the same thing when the yanks sent him down...he signed a 1 yr. deal with the white sox the other day
