Its a throwback from baseball's past, before it became popularized among the rest of the world. Back when it was named, the best baseball teams in the world truly were the teams in the American League and the National League.

They probably should rename it. Or at least get some expansion fanchises outside of the U.S. besides the token Bluejays.

You DO understand that you're not the first person ever to ask this, right?

scorch_22 has it right. The first "World Series" was played in 1903. In those days baseball was essentially unknown outside the U.S., and the name was, for all practical purposes, accurate. More importantly, big superlatives are always an effective marketing tool.
By the time the sport caught on elsewhere, the name had already stuck.

God bless them, they think if it's not in the Americas then it does not count. Try asking them to point to America on a map with no place names on it. Bet you they point to the biggest land mass, usually Russia and China combined. Don't have a problem with Americans just their stupid politicians. Like George Dubya

Because Americans believe that America is the World, and all the other countries are just sub-dominants, that don't really matter.
