When you flush a toilet or see water go down a drain, why does it go counter clockwise?What makes it do that?

It's an urban myth that its the Coriolis Effect (rotation of the earth)
"Most toilets flush in only one direction, because the toilet water flows into the bowl at an angle. If water shot into the basin from the opposite direction, the water would spin in the opposite direction"

That's the way that the jets point the water in the toilet. If they pointed the other way, it would go clockwise.

People say that it's because of the coriolis force, but that force only works on large bodies of moving matter, like hurricanes or thunderstorms. Small ones, like the water in a bath tub or sink, aren't as strongly affected.

To prove this, run a few inches of water into a sink or tub. Open the train, and let it drain out. Once the vortex forms, use your hand to reverse its direction. It will keep draining that way with no problems.

Its gravitational pull, toilets in Australia flow clockwise...got that one off the simpsons...who says cartoons rot ya brains
