There is no such thing as "British" nobility. The lowest rank of the English peerage is Baron, in Scotland the equivalent is a Lord, ie Lord of Parliament. Baronet is a hereditary title of gentility, and knight its non-hereditary equivalent. The feudal Barony still exists in Scotland, although this is a title of gentility and is no longer maintained in an official register proving ones right to the title.
