I have a wireless dell laptop and the person who sold it to said i need a router to get internet access and?

If you want to use your notebook at school, a library or a coffee shop, your dell is ready to roll. If you want to connect up via wireless at home, you need to pay for an internet account(cable or dsl) and buy a wireless router. If you want to connect up via nic, you need only to pay for the internet account. Your dell has an onboard nic. If you want to connect ANYWHERE, you need to get a WWAN account (verizon, sprint, tmobile) and a WWAN card. Many companies are giving the cards away because they make so much off the service. If you decide on WWAN, make sure you try the fit of the card before you leave the store. Alot of companies are selling the OLD style card, not the new "express card"

You would need a wireless card if it isnt already installed in your laptop. And you might need an ethernet cable if you think you would use a wired connection.
