This is one of those bizarre questions that I find difficult to comprehend people asking. Look, yours is the most overtly capitalist nation in the world. Gas is a vital commodity; like any other, it is sold for *profit*. As with any business, the idea is to sell for as much as possible. If it weren't for the existence of an ombudsman (OPEC), the prices would be higher still. OPEC oversees the production of oil by the major producers and sets the prices; however, and this is THE key thing to bear in mind: oil is a *finite* resource. It will run out and as it does the price will rise. Therefore, no one should *ever* be surprised that the price of oil, and the related products from it e.g. petrol (gas), continues to rise.
With massive economic growth in developing parts of the world, the demand for oil increases too, which obviously makes matters worse.
Now, with global warming a very genuine problem (a potentially *extinction level* problem, in fact), it's time for the States to start applying some of its financial might towards alternative forms of energy - for it's own good if not for the good of the planet.
Please, all you whinging Americans, try to stop thinking only in terms of your own personal wellbeing, on how much the prices hurt *you*, and start thinking about the effect your policies and behaviour is having on the *planet*. We *all* live here you know.

Supply and demand.
Our demand for fuel continues to grow while our refining capability and worldwide crude production does so at a slower rate. Simple economics. There's no widespread gouging, no panacea other than using less fuel.

this week I think it's to pay the per diem of the off-shore
drillers that were brought in because of the hurricane.
(the last time was a flat on a tanker that wasn't carrying a
spare)
