The Rule of Law.
Adolf Hitler was legally elected as Chancellor in 1933; then he was appointed President by Hindenburg. The soon after that Hitler legally passed the enabling act which was to protect Germany from all the 'enemies of the state' such as Catholics, Jehovah's Witnesses, Jews, Communists, and all other political parties.
Adolf Hitler remained in power through the 'power' of the LAW.

I believe it was a mix of two things.
A. He was in the right place at the right time:
After WWI Germany became the world's scapegoat. They ended up having to pay alot of money to other countries. So the people were poor and had horrible morale.
B. The man had a plan...and another scapegoat:
So here comes this guy screaming about how great this country really is. And that it can be great again, oh and by the way its not your fault...it's their fault (points to Jewish population)
The morale went up, Germany started exporting goods again and helped the economy. Now we have a leader that has helped a country when they were down. Here is where it gets ugly. By blaming the Jews for their lotton life, (probly because most German Jewish were wealthy at the time) they made it essential to strip them of their ranks, homes, posessions, and eventually their lives. Anything of value was ripped from them and put into Hitler, and his buddies, little saftey deposit box.
Eventually Hitler says "hey you know what to build a great society we need great people. And those people are blond haired, blue eyed men and women." *cough...cough..Jewish bad ..cough..cough*
He starts rounding the Jewish up or anyone who supports them and sending them to those horrible camps. Now you have a little fear mixed in which is very powerfull for ruling people. (Take a look at our current war on terrorism situation :-) Not only that but he says that we need to destory anything they wrote or owned, like BOOKS! So they started burning books. If you burn the one major source of education in a country, you keep your people dumb. Another powerfull tool for ruling a country with an iron fist.
So now their stupid, and scared, so whats next? We take away their weapons, except the army of course, so now we have unarmed, stupid, scared people.
Now that he has all of Germany under control he's getting a little too big for his britches and wants to move on to other countries. This catches the attention of other world leaders. Hence WWII.
The best way to take over a country is to keep the people stupid, and scared, oh and to find a scapegoat. Of course other things helped like the constant propaganda of pro-nazi films.
Hope that helped :-)

He improved the economy, created jobs, made a huge army, etc. He loved his own people just hated everyone else and killed millions. He was a great leader (economy wise) just insane as a person. He also didn't tell anyone about the Holocaust. He brought the damn country out of a period of terrible economic depression. I doubt the people supported his idea after 1939 but he kept in power through the SS, the secret police, and propaganda.
EDIT: Don't rate me bad. I in no way support what Hitler did. He was one of the most insane human beings in the history of the Earth. I'm just saying the facts.

eliminating the opposition, once he consolidated his power after being named the Chancellor in 1933. It wasn't overnight, but during the 30's his power grew as his opponents were carted off to concentration camps. By the time people woke up, it was 1939 and they were again at war with the western democracies.

He brought the Germans out of a depression. He built a series of interstate hwys that the world modeled theirs after. He built national pride back after the defeat in WWI. He plan and simply, did things that benefited most Germans, albeit hurtful to many.

Taken from history.com
Organizing meeting after meeting, terrorizing political foes with groups of party thugs, Hitler spread his gospel of racial hatred and contempt for democracy. He soon became a key figure in Bavarian politics, aided by high officials and businessmen. In November 1923, a time of political and economic chaos, he led an uprising (Putsch) in Munich against the postwar Weimar Republic, proclaiming himself chancellor of a new authoritarian regime. Without military support, however, the Putsch collapsed.
As leader of the plot, Hitler was sentenced to five years' imprisonment and spent the eight months he actually served dictating his autobiography Mein Kampf. Released as a result of a general amnesty in December 1924, he rebuilt his party without interference from those whose government he had tried to overthrow. When the Great Depression struck in 1929, his explanation of it as a Jewish-Communist plot was accepted by many Germans. Promising a strong Germany, jobs, and national glory, he attracted millions of voters. Nazi representation in the Reichstag (parliament) rose from 12 seats in 1928 to 107 in 1930.
During the following two years the party kept expanding, benefiting from growing unemployment, fear of Communism, Hitler's self-certainty, and the diffidence of his political rivals. Nevertheless, when Hitler was appointed chancellor in January 1933, he was expected to be an easily controlled tool of big business.

First successful Propaganda politician in the world. He was a great "make-believe" with a powerful oratorical skills.
Have you ever imagined, why we elect our politicians for a second term? It is almost similar with Germans. They believed in his lies, propagandas, preachings as much there were few facts in them, to be true.
He preached against his own leaders in the party he joined and came to power. His initial attempts for a coup were failure.

because as much as many of the old folks try to deny it now, his countrymen agreed with his ways and ideas.
he was politically a genius, personally a madman. he wanted his people to be the supreme race, hated the jewish people as well as any one else that wasn't 'one of their own'.
the few that didn't agree with him were so scared for themselves and their families they had to put on a great pretense in order to survive. make no mistake, he was very popular with the majority and in our current world his ways and thoughts are becoming popular again. frightening thought folks.
we know several german elders and they still hate the jews, but one thing i didn't know i learned from the french segment of elders, and that is the french elders still truly hate the germans. by elders i am speaking of folks over 75 years of age.
hopefully the world's younger generation will be a little less bigoted and we will all learn to live in peace.

charisma, and intimidation, and the SS. He not only sent people of other countries to the gas chambers, but also his own people. He also had some of the upper members of his own Nazi party assassinated early on in his rise to power, because he felt that they could be a threat to his rise to power.
