For over thirty years, thousands of movies were made without synchronized sound, which helped make them become the universal art form they are today. Audiences all over the world flocked to see the "movies", which were accompanied by live music played in the theater where they were shown, sometimes by piano, or organ, sometimes a band or even a small orchestra.
For those of you who've seen and appreciate films from the "silent" era, what are some of your favorites?

The silent version of Ben Hur is AWESOME.

As are the comedies of Harold Lloyd (Safety Last), Buster Keaton (The General), and Chaplin (The Gold Rush).

My very favorite silent is THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI. It's a great movie, plus I dig all the beautiful chiaroscuro and German expressionism in the set designs.
