Make that...typical uninformed Yankee fan
Jake, they lead in attendance because they play in the largest city in the U.S., and have a HUGE ballpark.

The Red Sox have always been very popular. I've been a fan for over 25 years and I can always remember seeing lots of Red Sox fans at away games on t.v., although not to the extent that there are now, I'll admit.
I was surprised to hear about this article, because I did think the Yankees were the most popular team.
I don't agree that the Red Sox wouldn't have fans if they didn't win the World Series. Sure, there were some people that jumped on the bandwagon, but it's the same way with any team that wins a championship in any sport. Besides, those Red Sox "fans" are gone now. They became White Sox fans in 2005 and Cardinal fans last year.

By asking a question like this you are inviting every Yankee hater out ther to put their typical "Yankees suck" as an answer. I'm a big time Yankee fan but I am not sick of the Redsox nor their fans. They help us make up the biggest rivalry in sports and it adds not only excitement but suspense to the AL baseball season. Its no different this season. We're behind by five games with six to play against Boston. How could you be sick of that? Who cares about an article in USA Today.

I read questions every day from people who ask the same question about The Yankees. I wouldn't be surprised if the same people posting "typical Yankee fan", are the ones who ask those questions. The Yanks and the Sox go head to head next week. So Sox fans when you log onto YA afterwords may I suggest you wear a cup.
Dan Z. Hate to break it to you, but just because people go to see them on the road doesn't mean they're fans. It's like Evil Knievel, allot of people wanted to see him crash.

The Red Sox have more "FANS" than the yankees do. Red Sox fans that were fans prior to 2004 are true fans, those that became fans after 2004, well, they are what I call frontrunner fans and are no better than a yankee fan.
If you look at road attendance only, the red sox draw the most fans.
BMR - Sorry to disapoint you, but if you watched any of the soz/sox series, most of the prople in the stands were red sox fans. Even in the seats behind home plate during Saturdays national fox broadcast!

So being the best team in all of baseball isn't a good enough reason to respect them? I'm not a Red Sox fan, but maybe I will become one since I hate the yankees and their fans so much. Come on man, don't be bitter the yanks are grabbing their ankles this year. Barry's already gave baseball a bad name, don't you do it too with ignorant comments.

Eh, the Boston Red Sox are funny, All their fans complain about how much money New York spends on players... guess who spent the second most? lol In general the Yankees have more respectable players, I'll stick with my pathetic rockies though.

Sorry, Mr. Steinbrenner. With apologies, John Henry. By all measures, baseball is the national past time of Japan, not the US. Here, football beats baseball by every measure - TV ratings, attendance, product sales, betting, the Super Bowl as a national holiday, etc. In Japan, no sport comes close to baseball in popularity - they are truly obsessed (and world champions, by the way). So it follows that baseball's most popular team is the most popular team in Japan, the incredibly successful Yomiuri Giants.

Make that typical Yankee fan who only wants people to agree with him. Asking Red Sox fans not to answer? Sounds like you're trying to rig it to me.
I personally think a better way to tell if a team is popular around the country is to look at the attendance at their away games, not when they are in their own city. A quick look will tell you that the Red Sox outdraw the Yankees on the road.
By the way, I'm neither a Red Sox fan or a Yankee fan.

uhm. saying sox fans can't answer this question is unfair.
go to a sox game anywhere in the country [besides yankee stadium] and you'll have more people cheering for them than the home team. which goes to prove they ARE americas team.

I found that article interesting too and I don't mind it much--but what does seem comical is that everything the Sox fans would criticize the Yankees for over the years (high payroll, trying to 'buy' championships, being 'America's team', etc.) and now they have become EXACTLY the same!
