Some of the most famous movies in film history were shot in black and white. Some great ones have been made in color, too.
Do you have a preference between the two? Why? Can you also provide the names of some of your favorites, either in black and white, color or both?

Black and white is my choice for many reasons but one is the simplicity...I find myself so much more immersed in the story and the characters when the distractions like color aren't there ( I must have a touch of ADHD) .Simplicity probably isn't really the right word though because the best B&W films are anything but simple....there is so much revealed in the shadows that would be lost in color. Most of my favorite movies, both classic and modern, are B&W such as Casablanca, 12 Angry Men, To Kill A Mockingbird, Psycho, Schindler's List. I have seen another favorite, The African Queen in both color and on a B&W TV and really was disappointed the first time I saw it in color....it took away so much of the atmosphere. Color though, enhances the story for me when there are glorious, panoramic scenery and costumes to enjoy. I can't imagine a movie like Barry Lyndon without the gorgeous color I saw on the big screen!

Color is nice, but there are certain advantages to b&w. Shadows are better, contrasts are better. Back in the day there was a certain type of film that was always b&w--film noir. They were dark movies and the use of shadow and light really gave them atmosphere.

One of my favorite b& w's is the original version of The Haunting (Julie Harris).

One of my favorite techno-color's is Meet Me In St Louis (Judy Garland)

And my favorite with both: The Women (Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer). The fashion show is filmed in color.

A little trivia for you: The reason that The Wizard of Oz was filmed in both, was to contrast the bleak, bland, and flat world of Kansas to the vibrant, brillance, and magical world of Oz.
