Here's a pretty good website describing everything involved with trying to copyright an actual comic book character:

http://www.publaw.com/fiction.html

It basically says that you would have to have an actual drawing of the character to provide a visual representation of what he looks like as well as a complete description/biography/etc since somebody else could come up with a character by coincidence.

Ron's mistaken. Under the Berne Convention, you automatically have copyright protection the second you create something and have it in a fixed form (so not just a "thought" or "conecept," it needs to be written down or recorded).

However, you can't be awarded damages if someone copies your work until you register it (they can be forced to remove/ take down the copied material though).

To register, check out the forms here: http://www.copyright.gov/forms/ .

if you make a copy of the story and write a copy write on it then send it to yourself it would count as a temperory copyright, if you dont open it, because that counts as a legal time document. if you start making money off of the character then you should get the more legal copyright
