While yes you could call the water company, I am betting by the hang up they are getting lots of calls. I would ask your neighbors if they are having the same issue, this will tell you if its a main. Then when they are done working on it, you should run the water until it runs clean of sediment. It may be as simple as them flushing the system or performing work . So head out and buy some bottled water for now, and maybe check in with the water co when you get home..Good Luck!

There is definitely a problem that needs to be addressed by the water company. If it was water coming up out of the drains then I'd say you had a waste water problem, but since it is coming out of the taps it is a supply problem. CALL them, there should even be a Hot Line #

Is your area flooded from one of last night's storms? If so, this is probably where the trouble is coming from. In one state, the sewage has soiled the drinking water.
Look in your yellow pages of the telephone book for a plumber. They will be able to tell you what is going on faster than your city departments.

The water company or fire department may be testing fire hydrants in your area. When this is done, stuff breaks off the inside of the pipes and goes into home water lines. Call the water company back or the non-emergency number for the fire department.

Call the water company again. They have to transfer you the maintenance department which goes out and check the water in your area. If it's the city's fault they fix it if not you have to get it fixed.
