Yes they can. If you are hourly, then you will be paid overtime. If you are salary, you are already compensated for extra hours.

A schedule is a guideline. It is not a contract. The employer has every right to make an employee work. Remember, you are expendable.

Yes, and they do. Sometimes they don't even pay more money. If the employee wants to keep his/her job then work will be done after hours. Usually nothing is done about this. This is the USA, we have the right to be ruled by the rich, be poorly rewarded for excessive work, and be treated like we don't matter.

IF the employee is in a CRITICALLY IMPORTANT job...yes.
SOME unions can and do deal with this, however. Fo instance, in a hospital, leaving WITHOUT relief can be called "Patient Abandonment" and the patient would have NOBODY to save them in a crisis.

I have been asked to work "involuntary overtime" before. As long as the needs of the business are concerned they can ask you to do anything.
