Why do people get grossed out at the thought of their parents having sex?

People always seem to shudder in movies, and real life, at the mere mention of their parents having sex. But it's only natural. Why is it so gross?

Wow, good question it does happen all of the time. I think there might be at least a couple of answers. First as children most of us are given a very negative view of sex. Rather then telling us what a wonderful thing it can be we are told all the negative aspects. So we have a distorted view of what sex really is. Then if we see our parents in the act we have witnessed something contradictory to what our parents have taught us. The other thing is since sexual activity is almost always associated with privacy children feel they have invaded their parents privacy. Also if children do not have a good understanding of the sexual act it can appear to be a violent activity and it can put fear into the child that one partner is hurting the other. When something is not completely understood it can bring up different emotions, including gross because of the body parts involved.

Each generation thinks that it alone discovered sex and acquires some measure of guilt about it. The idea of one's parents having sex is hard to accept except at the intellectual level. Maybe it is a repressed Oedipus complex.

I never thought about my folks having sex, but I did feel uncomfortable if, as an adult, my mother mentioned it. Of course, I've never felt comfortable discussing sex with anyone (brought up in the "last age of innocence," you know).

But I confess we deliberately bait my daughter, who is in her 40s, because she's guaranteed to say, "Eeeww, Mom, TMI! Don't Go There!"

Seriously, American society has some really bad norms about sexuality that are not present in other societies. I think that we'd be healthier with a more accepting attitude. (I'm not advocating a non-stop orgy, just realistic attitudes).

it's natural yes. I know I will be one of those parents myself... but the thought of our parents having sex more times then just to have us and our sibblings is just something we dont want to see or hear about. lol. its just a natural reaction i guess

Yeah, we all know it's natural, but so is farting or going to the bathroom. We'd rather not think or talk about it though.

because when i was a little kid, i didnt even know about sex, they were just my loving mom and dad that were nice and took care of me. but i never imagined them having their own personal lives. the fact that they would do something so "scandalous" (sex is rather taboo especially when your younger) is shocking.
