galvanizing prevents rust

apparently remove the 'a's from words. Steel reacts with oxygen in the presence of water to form oxides of metal (aka "rust"), right? That can be a problem. Especially when the metal is designed to carry water in the presence of oxygen. You'd have gutters rusting out like the side panels of a 70's vintage Toyota. Cheaper to let the water pour off the roof and dig a trench around the house. But wait! Suppose somebody figured out a way to electroplate steel with a non-reactive metal of some kind (oh, let's call it purely at random "zinc") in a process called "galvanizing". Why, that would open up all sorts of options - why you could stop making tin cans out of tin and start making them out of zinc-electroplated steel! No more rusting cans, and no more tin poisoning! Cheaper than canning in glass jars, too!. Galvanized iron could suddenly become a usable outdoor building material! Why the possibilities are virtually endless! (OK, not really, but it sounds good to say that). Does this answer the question for you, I hope?

To keep gutters from rusting is about it. I'll bet you didn't know rain gutters for the rich and famous are made from copper.

As for repelling insects and keeping debris from sticking the galvanized surfaces don't help. Galvanized surfaces require special primer if you want the paint to stick.

Rain gutters made from vinyl look just as good, last just as long but are cheaper and much easier to install.

If you ever win the lottery give these people a call.
