A veterinarian has 100 ft. of fencing to construct 6 dog kennels by first building a fence around a rectangular region, and then subdividing that region into six smaller rectangles by placing five fences parallel to one of the sides. Express the total area, A, of the kennels as a function of x, where x is the length of one of the seven parallel fences.

Length = x
width = y

Total perimeter:
2x + 2y + 5x = 100
7x + 2y = 100

solve for y.
2y = 100 - 7x
y = (100 - 7x) / 2

Area of the enclosure:
A = Length * Width
A = (x)(y)
A = x(100 - 7x) / 2

Let x = width of rectangle and also the length of the 5 parallel fences. Then (100 - 7x)/2 = length of rectangle.
So Area = x(100-7x)/2

19x sqr

first you make one square 4 sides
the other kenels need 3 sides
3x5 = 15 + 4 for the first = 19 sides

100/19=5.263
x=5.263 feet
