It accounts for most of the fresh water flowing in a river, in the world. The next top 10 rivers by volume of discharge, collectively (meaning all combined), move less water than the Amazon.

South America was a shallow sea for thousands of years. As the waters receded to the east, pool, lakes,small seas as well and many marsh lands were countinually draining into a primary river, in this case, the amazon. The amazon river is a very old river if not the oldest.

It has a high sediment load but no delta. I'm leaving it up to you to figure out why.
