The San Andreas fault slipped causing one plate to move on top of a another. I was here, it wasn't that bad at all. I would much rather live in an earthquake zone than on top of a volcano!!

The main effect was that highways collapsed, mostly in Los Angeles, this trapped many in their cars and was a transportation nightmare! Luckily there was a lucrative deal made where the contractor got a bonus of nearly 100 million by finishing the repairs to the highways very quickly.

The technical cause of the earthquake was strike-slip motion releasing stress build up on the Loma Prieta Fault Zone. The effects of the earthquake was to destroy a double-decker freeway, and to postpone the Oakland-San Franscisco World Series baseball game for a couple of weeks.

I am not an earth scientist. The cause of the 1989 quake was the same as any other because earthquakes are unpredictable. In general, if you want to know how they occur, here's a source. The source below has a description of the 1989 quake.

Look up the fault lines that run under and near SF. I'd rather live on a volcano, myself. Well, LA's worse off, but that's like saying pneumonia's worse than the flu. They can both kill you. As for the effects, check the papers for that time period.
