if they happened today how would people react??

Try and envisage Guantanamo bay. People held without trial on highly dubious evidence. Add a gullible media that'll fall for any "leak" from an "official source" and hey presto!

They would react the same way they did in the 1950's during the Communist Witch Hunts by Joseph McCarthy. They would be all for it at the beginning, then turn on the prosecutors for doing something so stupid.

Well...
they don't call them "witch" trials,
but people always seems to have one or more groups that they fear and persecute...
Today it might be Muslims or Hispanics or Gays or Republicans_____

How do you think? We do not live in superstitious times (comparatively) thus they would not be acceptable today. There would be some organization established to protect accused witches.
