The roots of religion are in early humanity's desire to explain what they couldn't understand.
Things like birth, death, the seasons, the lights in the sky, weather, floods, earthquakes, etc. were powerful but mysterious. The natural reaction of primitive people was to ascribe these phenomena to one or more divine beings.
They could see the moon, but they couldn't touch it. It gave light in the darkness of night -- usually -- but changed mysteriously from week to week. So it must be a god and not just a hunk of orbiting rock.
Combine that with the tendency to draw often-illogical associations between natural events and events in their own lives, as if one thing caused the other. (A cave man notices a certain alignment of the stars. The next day he breaks his leg. Therefore the stars must have caused his injury.)

Before you know it, you've got the beginnings of the formal religions we know today, in which millions are convinced that being dipped in water cleanses the soul of sin, or that walking in circles around a rock hidden inside a tent is a holy deed, and worse yet, where peoples' faith can be used by their leaders to convince them the righteousness of things that they would otherwise recognize as evil.

Religion was not invented. The word comes from the latin =which means "relation ship with God".
Man has invented philosophies and made those their God.
Such was the case of dictatorial socialism of the Soviet Union.
Where materialism became their God and made it a religion.

There are Philosophies and beliefs systems which came out of man's imagination and some of these are very chimerical.

Never the less relationship with our Creator is Real. It is not something that can be invented.
The Lord Jesus said :" I am the Way ,the Truth....."
That means the truth is Reality =not something invented.

well,,,,my take on your RELIGION question is :::::::::

what ,,,,sid says ::::

Stained glass windows keep the cold outside
While the hypocrites hide inside
With the lies of statues in their minds
Where the Christian religion made them blind
Where they hide
And prey to the God of a ***** spelled backwards is dog
Not for one race, one creed, one world
But for money
Effective
Absurd

This is religion
There's a liar on the altar
The sermon never falter
This is religion

Do you pray to the Holy Ghost when you suck your host
Do you read who's dead in the Irish Post
Do you give away the cash you can't afford
On bended knees and pray to lord
Fat pig priest
Sanctimonious smiles
He takes the money
You take the lies

This is religion
A liar on the altar
Sermon never falter
This is religion

This is religion and Jesus Christ
This is religion cheaply priced
This is bibles full of libel
This is sin in eternal hymn
This is what they've done
This is your religion
The apostles were eleven
Now there's a sod in Heaven

This is religion
Liar on the altar
The sermon never falter
This is religion

This is religion
Your religion
And it's all falling to bits gloriously
This is religion

Religion predates government, money, and most everything else. It was the reaction to man's ability to perceive his own mortality and how little he controls his daily existence. Religion or a belief in god takes away the fear of death and the distress of daily life, believing in a big daddy who has the power to make your life better.

The question of "Why am I here" has haunted man from the beginning. It was made up so that people would think they had a purpose here and that you weren't just born to die.

I think Judas Rabbi created religion. I still haven't figured out why, but I'm sure it's a part of some devious plot...

religion has always been a factor. it's been used to control people and manipulate them because of their fears. the reason for doing so is tons of power.
