This question seems to haunt me. May be the answer is different for each person. I know life's experiences make you who you are. Love, peace, getting to know yourself and God, ect. I'm not sure what I'm looking for in life, just something to open my eyes.

It seems like everyone is the same, stuck at a job they hate, year after year they live the same way. Too many people live like they are not really "alive". Nobody seems to question why they are here.

Does it matter what you career is, how much money you make, what race you are, where you live? Why do people think they can buy happiness? You do what you do and at least you exist. What could mean more?

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

The purpose of life is [insert any clever sounding one liner], because of [insert spiritual nonsense or specious biological bullshit]. What would it mean to ask what the meaning of life is? What does the question actually mean? I'm seriously wondering because it doesn't make any sense. It would imply an intentional mandate given to you are everyone before you were born and you are thus obligated to abide by it. It's insane.

Everything has a purpose. This is proven.
Therefore life has a purpose, so perhaps life is like a test?
I think the meaning of life is to give life meaning. Make your life great! It's very possible.
By the way, a lot of people question why we are here.
You know, I see philosophy as a puzzle. Everybody has a little piece of it, and by asking questions like this you can piece together something pretty cool. You will never get the whole puzzle, but you will get a lot out of it.

Down deep, we want to be loved for who we are and not what we do for other people. Yet the praise we get, both real and imagined, is from other people and society in general. Their objective is not to build your self worth but to control your behavior.

If you reject God, there is no hope for purpose:

“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell (philosopher, mathematician and self proclaimed atheist)

Without God, all we can do is to do some things that will help us get through a pointless, meaningless life. Things like, keep busy, focus on small trivial happinesses, build your self esteem by doing some meaningless good deeds.

But if God created us, it must have been for some other purpose than to control our behavior for He would have the power to make us puppets. I think He wants us to seek Him and putting that great need for meaning and purpose into our human nature is His way to point us to Him.

I know what you mean, I feel the same way sometimes. I often think why do I deserve the life I have now and why do I have a curse that haunts me. I use to think that I did something really bad in my past life so now the life I am living I will have to pay the price. Life is a mystery and the only way to solve it is to live it.

I don't know some big intellectual answer to that but i no that i use to feel the same way alot of the times. I am a christian. I do believe that we all have our purpose in this world and God has an ultimate plan for each of us. One thing to suggest is do some praying and ask God to reveal himself to you. If you like to sing put in some worship music and just sit down and listen to the words. start to sing along with them and really understand what you sing. Start reading your bible don't start in gensis though go back to James, and John i love ecclesiastics (SP?) I do believe though that everything in our life makes a difference to somebody else and that everything does happen for a reason but i don't think we are suppose to look for it just trust God and then he will show it to us. I hope you find what your looking for, and i will be praying for you because i know that there are alot of answers to this question out there and that people will try to turn you away from the God answer but trust in God and know that there is a God but there is also an enemy who doesn't want you to come to know God and will do anything to keep you from the truth. Hope this helped and the wording was right. God bless :) i also suggset maybe wathcing movies like the passion of christ or left behind, if this is a big struggle go to a local church and talk to the pastor there or a one of the godly women there let them no where you stand and what questions you have.

To me, life is just a big huge adventure.
To a lot of people, I assume since no one really knows for sure what happens after this, if anything, they are just trying to gain control by having a job that they aren't particularly happy with. Or maybe they are trying to prepare themselves for bigger things to come. Maybe they are living in fear of God or terrible things that MIGHT happen to them.
But I feel that this is completely ridiculous. You should always love yourself first. Because ultimately, you are the one that will deal with the consequences. Life is only meaningless if you allow it to be. You have to make the most of it. Make lemonade, baby!

Well, according to what I understand of the "Bible". The purpose of our "existence" is to extend God's Kingdom from Heaven to Earth.

The "fall of man" was not a fall from "heaven", but from our "position" as rulers of the Earth. When we commited "sin" we severed the connection between God and Man. The Bible is our "instruction manual" on how to bridge that connection once again, and meant to restore us to our original state which was "Rulers in the Garden Of Eden". The original meaning of "Eden" translates as: "God's Presence" and not a physical place. We have to re-establish that connection with God so that His presence will return, then He can rule Earth once again "through us" as He originally intended.

"Thy Kingdom Come. Thy Will Be Done, On Earth Just As It Is In Heaven"...

Everyone wants to go to Heaven, while God is trying to get Heaven to the Earth. The above passage is an excerpt from the "Lord's Prayer". The disciples asked Jesus how to pray, and He answered with that prayer.

The entire purpose for Jesus' return was to restore His Kingdom to the Earth. From the beginning of His ministry to the day He was raised up to Heaven, His message was the same "The Kingdom"....."Repent for the Kingdom Of Heaven Is At Hand!" is how it started, and every parable He told was referring to the Kingdom. "The Kingdom Is Like...."

I know the majority of people think "Kingdom?". Well, if you study how a kingdom really works, then it won't leave such a bad taste in your mouth : ) We have to stop focusing on what Jesus "did", and focus on what He actually said! Gotta' Go! Good Luck On Your Journey! --------------> Jack

Yup. Life is meaningless. At least, to me it is. I'm still convinced that this is all some random being's dream. Not sure if it's human or not. Probably is, I mean, our dreams usually have humans don't they? Or it could be a planet... and we're like the unimportant molecules of the planet.... >.>
