So, Chris - what are you going to do if you don't have a web connection handy? Try looking at your periodic table for the first bit - Mg is the symbol for Magnesium, right? (yes - I know you've already been told this many times, but you'd better learn to find it for yourself!). OH is the chemical symbol for the hydroxyl ion (1 Hydrogen and 1 Oxygen) which, when combined with a positive ion gives the "family name" 'hydroxide'. Having two OHs doesn't matter to the name here; it has to have 2 because Mg is a '+2' ion like Calcium. So, as you know, it's called Magnesium Hydroxide. Just like you're called Chris Lastnamehere. You might have a brother; let's call him Herbert Lastnamehere. Well, Mg(OH)2 has a brother too; good old NaOH. Sodium Hydroxide is Magnesium's little brother - always getting his big brother in trouble, etc. That's how these molecules are named: first name is the metal ion, last name is the salt ion. Probably make a good TV sitcom, if it was packaged right. "My Three Sulfates" or "Two's Exothermic!"
