laptop display problems?

i have a hp pavillion dv 1000 the screen is pretty much dark unless i tilt it into some light i have tried the f keys to make it brighter but it still reamains dark

Sounds like the backlight has gone, or the inverter card that powers the backlight.

It needs to go back to HP for repair. A new backlight will mean a new LCD panel - expensive if it is not under warranty. A new inverter card is cheap, but I do not know how much HP will charge just for opening it up.

If you do send it in, pull the hard drive out first. That way no one can wipe all your data by reinstalling the original drive image for you.
