The direct numbers besides magnitude also specify their position on a positive or negative scale. + above zero and - below zero (or to the left or to the right if you like). Where the direction relative to zero is being specified by + or - sign.

For example
-10 degrees and +10 degrees are of the same magnitude but are not the same when it comes to direction.
