Romeo-"By a name I know not how to tell thee who I am. My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself because it is an enemy to thee. Had I it written, I would tear the word.”

Paris-"These times of woe afford no times to woo."

Juliet-"O, swear not by the moon, th' inconstant moon, that monthly changes in her circle orb, lest that thy love prove likewise variable."

Romeo - i cant tell you my name. My name is the name of your enemy, and you'll automatically hate me because of my last name. I hate my name SO much, i want to destroy it (tear the word).

Paris - With the war between familys (war of woe) you cant go falling in love with your enemies daughter (woo)

Juliet - I want to swear my love to him, but i'm not going to pick the moon. The moon comes and goes and isnt constant. It changes every month. But maybe my love is just as changing as the mood??

ok Romeo's saying he hates his name because Romeo and Juliet's families are enemies and their love is forbridden and if his name was different it would be no problem to love her. And Juliet is saying not to swear his love to the moon because it changes every week and she doesn't want his love to change like the moon changes. And Paris is saying in these sad times you have no time to try to make someone love you; hope I helped!!

okay...in the first one romeo is saying that he doesn't want to tell Juliet his name because the Montague's and Capulet's are enemies, and Juliet might just judge him on his name. And he hates his name because Juliet won't like it. Had he written it, he would tear it up.

the third one means that Juliet wants Romeo to swear by something more constant than the moon (because the moon changes), and she wants to know that their love is something that won't change.

explanation of situation? first one, when their meeting, and Juliet asks his name, maybe? third, when romeo swears he loves Juliet and she wants him to prove it. not really sure if that's what you meants.

First of all it is a mistaken notion that Shakespeare is not modern language. It is, it has a few words we no longer use such as thee, but it is modern English as opposed to Middle or Old English which were different languages.

Second, just say the words slowly in short phrases and you will begin to understand what they are saying, it is poetic, so it is a little unfamiliar to someone who is only used to prose. If there are any words you don't understand, use the dictionary.

Romeo is ashamed of his family name because he knows that, due to the ongoing violence and hatred between his and Juliettt's family, if she knew who he REALLY was, she would hate him, too.

Paris is saying that romance is very difficult, and, in fact, gets in the way, during these troubled times.

Juliette tells Romeo not to make any promises he can't keep. Many lovers promise their sweethearts to deliver "the moon," but who can really do that? Even the moon changes faces many times each month.
