Probably a trojan horse/worm. If it is a trojan horse, the best program to get rid of it is the security task manager - http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/download.html . This will tell you all the programs running and rate them on how dangerous they appear. It is absolutely free, but you can pay extra for an updated version. Try that first. If it doesn't work, it may be a worm. Worms are much harder to get rid of, but here is a list of all known worms so far: http://www.2-spyware.com/worms-removal. It may also be a driver issue. If you installed any programs/drivers recently, try uninstalling them and see if that helps.

Okay, if your battery doesn't hold a charge anymore, it's not going to last 8 hours. That would be why it's shutting off. If it's not a virus, it's your battery. Most likely, it's the latter. Get a new one, should fix it.

All the above answers are good, one other thing to look at is heat. Are your case vent ports clear and your fans working. most computers have a thermal overload switch that will shut down the machine should it get too hot to try and prevent damage.

Did you happen to have your computer overheat recently? It seems to me that your computer has melted some of the hardware and when it turns on it will only run to a certain temp and turn its self off due to internal damage
