I left the civil service last year after 24 years following a problem with my health because of which I lost a lot of time at work. I was not sacked but paid off with compensation to pretty much go away.

Now that my health problem has been resolved I cannot get a job as all prospective employers go back to the civil service for references. The civil service simply tell them that yes I worked for them but had my contract terminated last year due to unsatisfactory attendance.

I know this cos one bloke showed me the reference. It does not mention the health problem or that they made me redundant with a large compensation payment.

How can I get round this as I'm getting loads of interviews but no further and more than a few have told me it it is because of my references

Once you know a company is interested and is thinking of contacting your references, it's time to be honest. You need to tell them, look, I really want this position, but because of health issues I had to be away from work and ultimately lost my position because of it.
You need to point out heavily, that you were in the position for 24 years!!! If you really had an issue with attendance, your employment wouldn't have lasted so long.

Another thing I might do is try to get a co-worker or manager or someone, to write a letter of recommendation.

I would tell them about your attendance problem at your last job up front during the interview. Tell them that when they check this reference this is what they are going to find, but at the same time tell them that this issue has been resolved and maybe even produce a release from your doctor that everything is OK now. I think if they know what to expect before they make the reference call it will allow you to explain for yourself why you were absent and they will look upon it favorably that you were honest with them.

If you got a problem with your health ,then I can understand why employers are not interested, and after 24 years in one job its very hard for employers to let you go,so you must have made life hell for them.
I sense the whole Truth is not coming out here so the best thing to do is give them their money back and ask for your old job back :somehow I don't think so r you looking for another soft touch to claim COMPO after a few months
